Importance of Adjective in English Grammar

Although some countries have their own language, English is taught as an important medium of instruction. Having a good command over English also demands a good concept of English basic grammar.

There are several grammar books which will help you to understand the basics of grammar in English. It is important that you have a clear concept of what tense, verb, noun or adjective to use and when to use these. Among the basic understanding of grammar, Adjective is an important part.

What is an Adjective?

We try to convey our thoughts and feelings through language. While trying to convey the same in English, it is important that we draw up a concise, clear and to the point sentence. Forming sentences in English requires the use of adjective as it is commonly used and is an inseparable part of speech.

Adjectives usually assist in describing a noun perfectly. It also helps to both quantify and modify the noun accordingly. Impeccable grammar skills include a good understanding of adjective and its uses. Sometimes even a pronoun can be described thoroughly with the help of an adjective.

Some of the words which can be counted as an adjective are quite common like beautiful, good, bad, cute, blissful, lazy, slowly, etc. The use of the adjective in a sentence also decides the form of an adjective that is used. Attributive Adjective normally precedes the noun and Predicative Adjective succeeds the verb.

What is the Importance?

Using different kinds of an adjective in a sentence helps us to get a clear understanding of what is being said or conveyed. The importance of adjective in english basic grammar also depends on the knowledge of the various kinds of adjectives used. The Adjective which describes the quality of a noun or that of a pronoun is known as the Qualitative Adjective.

Any adjective describing the quantity of either the noun or the pronoun is known as the Quantitative Adjective. It is Numeral Adjective when a certain number is expressed in a sentence. “Some money is still left” is an example of Quantitative Adjective where, “some” is the adjective indicating the amount of the noun,” money”. When “some” is replaced by a number it becomes Numeral Adjective.

Demonstrative, Interrogative, Possessive, Distributive, Proper and Indefinite are some of the other kinds of adjectives used in a sentence. Sometimes, articles like “a”, “an” and “the” are also used as an adjective.
